The Powerful Practices document and checklist was created by the AASA* with help from local school leaders, district staff, physicians, professors, other health professionals. It’s designed to help school districts identify areas in which they are currently doing well with asthma management programs and also areas that may need improvement. *The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) is working to reduce the burden of asthma among children and youth in schools. AASA is part of a five-year effort funded by the Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
New Guidelines: Asthma Management In School
Download the most up-to-date information about how school health and other personnel can assist children in managing their asthma in the school setting, the Guidelines for the Management of Asthma in California Schools. Developed jointly by health professionals in the California Department of Education and the California Asthma Public Health Initiative (CDHS) in statewide collaboration with asthma experts and stakeholders, the Guidelines are based upon expert reports from the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP). The guidelines are endorsed by the American Lung Association of California, the California Thoracic Society, and the California School Nurses Organization and are supported by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jack O'Connell.
