Asthma Care Resources
The American Lung Association is working to reduce the impact of asthma, which affects an estimated 180,000 adults and 55,000 children in San Diego and Imperial Counties.
- Along with the San Diego Regional Asthma Coalition, the Association is part of CAFA, the Community Action to Fight Asthma Initiative. This is a three-year statewide effort funded by The California Endowment dedicated to improving the environments where children with asthma live, learn, and play. In San Diego, CAFA is focused on the Mid-City neighborhood.
- The San Diego Childhood Asthma Initiative is a collaboration between the American Lung Association, Children's Hospital and Health Center, and the Council of Community Clinics with the goal of improving asthma management for children ages 0-4. Active in North County, East County, San Diego Mid-City, National City, and Barrio Logan, the Initiative is funded by the state and local Children and Families Commissions that receive funding from Proposition 10.
- SCAMP Camp for kids with moderate to severe asthma ages 8-13 (to be held June 20-25, 2004)
- The first-ever Asthma Walk, "Blow the Whistle on Asthma," held on September 29, 2002
- School classes that teach asthma management, called "Open Airways for Schools"
- Public information, referral services, and
Research into the causes and treatments of asthma and other lung diseases.
