Asthma and the Flu Vaccine
Research conducted by the American Lung Association's Asthma Clinical Research Centers Network has found that neither children nor adults with asthma are harmed by influenza vaccines. Based on these findings, the Association is encouraging children and adults with asthma not to hesitate in obtaining the flu vaccine, since a case of influenza can lead to severe worsening of asthma symptoms. The study included 2,032 children and adults who were diagnosed with asthma. Patients were randomly assigned to receive the actual flu shot or a placebo injection. The two groups switched in the middle of the study so that all participants had received the real flu vaccine by the end of the study. The results were published November 22, 2001 in the New England Journal of Medicine.
