New Support to fight Asthma in Imperial County
The American Lung Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties is pleased to once again offer the Open Airways for Schools program to Imperial County schools. Through funding received from The California Wellness Foundation and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the program will be offered to Imperial County children with asthma during 2004. Open Airways for Schools is a school-based, asthma education program for children in grades 3-5. It is a culturally-sensitive program with a six-lesson interactive curriculum designed to equip children and their families with a better understanding of asthma and the techniques needed to effectively manage it. Topics presented include recognizing the warning signs of asthma and handling acute episodes, recognizing asthma triggers to include indoor air quality triggers, effective prevention strategies, use of peak flow meters and spacers and appropriate administration of medications.
Thanks to this new grant support, the Association can offer the Open Airways program to all 20 public elementary schools in Imperial County, potentially reaching 675 children with asthma by 2007.
The Association will also continue to serve as a lung health resource to Imperial residents and work toward improved air quality through public policy activities.
