Amazing Asthma Facts
Asthma is a chronic lung condition increasingly recognized as a major international public health problem. In the last 15 years, the worldwide prevalence of asthma has doubled. In the United States, the rates of asthma deaths, hospitalizations, and emergency department visits have been increasing for more than two decades. Asthma now brings 2 million Americans per year into the emergency room and claims 5000 lives. Approximately 150,000 adults and children in San Diego County have asthma, about a third of them children. Asthma affects approximately 17 million people in the US, including an estimated 2.3 million Californians. It is the leading cause of serious chronic illness for all children in the United States, and is the leading cause of childhood hospitalizations. The cost of asthma to the United States in 2000 was estimated to be $12.7 billion, the combination of direct costs amounting to $8.1 billion and lost earnings due to illness and death totaling $4.6 billion. It's a leading cause of school absenteeism, imposing more than 10 million missed days in the US last year.
