Underestimating a Killer
Physicians generally underestimate the severity of their patients' asthma, and therefore are under-treating it, according to a study presented in November, 2001 at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians. Under-managed asthma can lead to added days spent in emergency rooms, and to complications as serious as death. Both patients and providers are urged to take asthma seriously, establish and stick to a management plan, and learn more by contacting the Association. The study presented was conducted by the Multicenter Airway Research Collaboration (MARC), a network of emergency care physicians focused on asthma, and was funded by GlaxoSmithKline.
