"Dirty Electricity" Is No Solution to the Current Crisis
The threat of added pollution casualties has the Association concerned about drastic steps to increase electricity production in California. The Board of Directors of the American Lung Association of California recently called for the protection of clean air standards in a document named "Energy Crisis and Electric Generation Principals," which calls for the state to:
  • oppose increased reliance on diesel generators to meet short-term electricity needs;
  • limit the use of diesel generators to "black-out" emergency situations;
  • give priority for the development of electricity supplies to the cleanest sources of electricity, such as wind, geothermal and solar; and
  • oppose the weakening of air quality standards or short-circuiting environmental review processes in order to speed up the construction of power plants.
