Influenza
What is Flu?
Flu (influenza) is a highly contagious viral infection of the nose, throat and lungs. It is easily spread through the air or by direct contact from one person to another, especially when the infected person coughs or sneezes.
Symptoms are much more severe than the common cold. They may include high fever, chills, dry cough, headache, runny nose, sore throat, muscle and joint pain as well as extreme fatigue. The flu usually lasts a week or more.
How Many People Get Influenza?
- In the U.S. - An estimated 95 million Americans had influenza during 1996 (the most recent date for which figures are available.)
- In California -- An estimated 11,600 people had influenza during 1996
- In San Diego County -- An estimated 975,450 people had influenza
- In Imperial County - An estimated 48,7000 had influenza
Other Influenza Statistics
- Influenza, and its leading complication, pneumonia, together are the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. They are the fifth leading cause of death among people aged 65 and older .
Should I Get the Flu Vaccine?
One simple vaccination every year causes antibodies (proteins that fight infections) to develop in your body and provides protection that lasts throughout the flu season. An annual flu shot is an easy way to ward off the flu. You cannot get the flu from the shot. The flu shot is recommended for everyone over 50 and other groups at risk. These high-risk groups include people of any age with chronic diseases of the heart, lung or kidneys, diabetes, immunosuppression, or severe forms of anemia. People with chronic lung conditions, including children with asthma, should be sure to receive this important protection each year.
Additionally, anyone else who wishes to reduce their chances of contracting flu may also receive the vaccine.
