Unveiling July 2001
On July 19, the Association unveiled the Lung Express, a 40-foot bus converted into a traveling exhibition space and teaching tool. Powered by clean natural gas, the Lung Express is unique in the nation for the way it has placed state-of-the-art interactive lung health educational exhibits into a mobile vehicle.

Lung ExpressThe Lung Express is geared to achieving an ambitious goal: that the region's children will know more about keeping their lungs healthy than kids anyplace else. The Lung Express is visiting schools throughout San Diego and Imperial Counties and also appears at community events.

The project grew out of an appraisal that the American Lung Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties undertook three years ago. "We discovered that as a leader in lung disease prevention, research, and education, it was vital for us to become more visible in communities throughout our region," Davis says. "The Lung Express shows who we are, and explains in the best way possible what lung health is."

The 15 high-tech exhibits inside the Lung Express are designed to generate knowledge and change behavior "by getting kids to say 'wow' about their lungs." Technical challenges including wheelchair access, natural gas-powered electricity and air conditioning, reliability and durability in heavy-usage environments, and special focus on health messages that are simple and effective were among the hurdles that the Association and its team faced during the two years leading up to the unveiling of the Lung Express.
