The Lung Express: Paying for the Dreams
(July 19, 2001) – As a new flagship project, the Lung Express is a significant expense for the American Lung Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties. "It does cost a lot to go with the best exhibits and exemplar technology, but the visibility and quality of the Lung Express is attracting important new donor support," says Association CEO Janie Davis.

Among those who are helping to pay for the dream of the Lung Express are the Sawaya Family Trust, AstraZeneca, the Tobacco Control Resource Program, Merck, the Hilton Hotels Corporation, San Diego National Bank, and Rest Haven Children's Health Fund. Time Warner Cable has also signed on as the media sponsor of the Lung Express.

Opportunities to support the Lung Express come in a variety of sizes, according to Michele Vastola, the Association's Development Director. "Everyone can play a role in keeping the Lung Express on the road. For example, families and individuals can underwrite the expense of a Lung Express visit to a school by joining the Lung Express Booster Club, now in formation. Companies and community foundations are being approached to take on entire exhibits."

In addition to capital investment in the bus and its exhibits, the Lung Express has ongoing operational expense associated with maintenance and the presence of a Respiratory Therapist who doubles as driver and tourguide.

The Lung Express will be visiting schools in San Diego and Imperial Counties beginning in September 2001. It is a flagship project of the American Lung Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties, the community leader in lung disease prevention, research, and education. The Association's programs include the annual SCAMP Camp, Open Airways for Schools, and other efforts to assist children with asthma; partnerships with county health departments and other agencies to combat tuberculosis; Better Breathers Clubs to support adults with impaired lung function; advocacy and leadership in creating a tobacco-free and environmentally healthy community; support for lung research; and ongoing education of health care providers and the public about lung health.
