Lung Express Helps Promote Poway Rodeo at Camp Pendleton
(September 12, 2005) – As new studies show that California's active military have higher rates of tobacco use than the general population, the American Lung Association is sending its Lung Express bus on an outreach mission to Camp Pendleton.

Poway RodeoThe visit by the American Lung Association's Lung Express to the San Onofre school on September 22 will be a chance for kids to learn how their lungs work and how they are affected by tobacco use. The visit comes as part of promoting the Poway Rodeo, which has formally declined to accept sponsorship from any tobacco companies. Free Rodeo tickets are available for Camp Pendleton families.

The school visit will be the second recent appearance by the Lung Express at Camp Pendleton. On August 13 at Pacific Plaza Community Day, the traveling lung health exhibit was a big hit with families. This month's school visit is structured as a teaching opportunity, spotlighting the dangers of tobacco as well as how tobacco companies target young people.

At the same time, free Poway Rodeo tickets will be available for families. The Camp Pendleton Youth Sports League will be giving out 100 tickets for youth and chaperones, while the Community Relations Office has 30 VIP tickets available for active duty personnel who have recently returned stateside. The California Department of Health Services reported on September 6, 2005 that the California average for smoking is 15.4 percent, while among the active military stationed in California, the Marines have the highest rate of smoking at 26.9 percent. The data was gathered in 2003 and 2004. Among the findings, the higher the rank, the less likelihood of smoking. Overall military smoking prevalence in California was 21.6 percent.

The use of other tobacco products, including chew, is also higher in the military: 17.4% of active military use other tobacco products compared to 5.9% of the general California population.
